Recent Events - the DS “Bricker”
I feel that this should be said considering how people are saying #dsdev supports the bricker…
I, BigRedPimp, am the founder of #dsdev on EFNet. Rumor has been going around that the bricker app (which renders stock Nintendo DS units useless) is supported by the ops of my channel. This is not the case. The fact of the matter is that I am disgusted with certain individuals who not only created it but condone its creation by saying “because I can”. This, to be blunt, is bullshit. You are single-handedly making it hard to trust anyone out there looking for help on their current work. Why someone would create an “app” that would turn a US$120+ portable device into a paperweight is beyond me. I think this individual needs a serious reality check. Just because you can afford a DS whenever you want one doesn’t give you the FUCKING RIGHT to destroy the rest of ours. I’ll be expecting some sort of retort for this but I don’t care.
In closing, I reiterate the point that the staff of EFNet #dsdev does NOT condone the use of the bricker in any way, shape or form. Support positive development, not destructive. That is all.

There’s a lot of people asking “WHY?” — Now I’m not trying to take sides, to justify, or to make it right, but here are some things for everyone’s consideration, including those crying murder:
1. DarkFader spent countless hours learning how to dump/write/erase firmwares for many DS devices ; CrashMe “showcases” all the knowledge he has accumulated, either from his reverse engineering, or other people’s info/official documentation.
2. Before “CrashMe,” there was Tubgirl.nds, disguised as a rom loader, pretty much like DF’s program in the way that it basically flips off warezers. Then people started jokingly talking about “making an app that pretends to be a warez app and destroys your DS” — well, be careful what you wish for!
3. The PSP scene had one, and it made slashdot. Everything they do, we must do better
4. DF linked to his brickers on several occasions, they were always thoroughly explained either before or after the links were pasted, the only person who got “tricked” didn’t speak english, but had flashme installed, therefore it was recoverable. The r0mloader.zip was the only one advertised outside of #dsdev, it targeted people interested in running commercial roms, the person advertising it was using a .nl proxy — that’s not very relevant however… I believe that it was originally meant as an inside joke, and was not meant to leak out of #dsdev…
5. Unless I’m mistaken, DF is working on a fixer utility, I also noticed that he complained about the lack of open official documentation for programmers ; perhaps he wants to use this to pressure GBAMP/g6/etc into releasing the docs?
6. As joat said, if he truly wanted to kill everyone’s DS, he could have gone much further ; this was obviously meant as a joke — whether it was of good taste or not is subjective… (Although a lot of people are not really leaning towards the good taste option)
Oh yeah, and to those who are wondering about the rumors, Darkfader does not own neoflash, and he is not killing “everything except neoflash” –the program does attempt to erase XG/Neo carts, but well, if you’ve got only the r0mloader on it, not like it’s gonna be a big loss
(and flash carts like neoflash cannot be ‘bricked’)
And finally, just because people in #dsdev tell you to GTFO, or seem to say “serves you right,” etc, doesn’t mean that we are happy people’s DSes are being turned into bricks. However, if you’re coming in just to start useless drama, we’re not going to be friendly with you!

I’ve just started learning about the homebrew scene, and coming across articles like this scares the hell out of me. Firstly, it means I’m going to have that much harder of a time learning about writing my own apps as my intentions may be second-guessed. Secondly, it scares me to think that things like this might end up being written over into supposed ‘tools’ that one might think were for learning more about the DS.
Really, it’s in bad taste to brick a system of any sort.. Money doesn’t grow on trees. =/
So when will I be unbanned from #dsdev (and #gbadev)?
